From midnight of July 18, 2024, cars with Belarusian registration plates will not be allowed to enter the territory of the European Union.

The ban on entry into the EU applies to passenger cars, regardless of the nationality of the owner or driver.

Under the exception applied by the Economy and Innovation Ministry, until August 16, it will be possible to bring into the territory of Lithuania a passenger car which is not intended for sale, and which belongs to a Belarusian citizen who holds a valid visa or a valid temporary or permanent residence permit for entry into the EU, and who is driving the vehicle for their personal use.

The exemption does not apply to passenger cars owned by organisations or companies or used for commercial purposes.

The Customs Department informs that passenger cars with Belarusian registration plates already in the EU, including Lithuania, are obliged to leave the territory of the bloc until January 18, 2025.

Until this date, cars with Belarusian registration plates may be in circulation in the territory of Lithuania, as well as imported and registered in Lithuania.

After January 18, 2025, cars registered in Belarus will not be allowed to stay on Lithuanian territory. Persons driving cars with Belarusian registration plates after the announced deadline will be considered to be in breach of the legislation and will be fined, while their cars will be confiscated.

The ban does not apply to the entry into the territory of the EU of cars registered in Belarus with a diplomatic licence plate when the car is necessary for the functioning of a diplomatic and consular mission or an international organisation enjoying immunities under international law or is intended for the personal use of diplomatic staff and their immediate family members.
